Carla Jungquist, RN-C, PhD received notification that her submission to American Academy of Sleep Medicine has been accepted, and she has been invited to participate in the 2010 AASM Young Investigator Research Forum in April, 2010 in Bethesda, MD.

Christine Boev, staff nurse in the PICU and a PhD student in the School of Nursing, is the recipient of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses/Sigma Theta Tau critical care grant award for her dissertation proposal entitled “Nurses’ Perception of Work Environment and Nurse-sensitive Patient Outcomes in Critical Care.”

Honors and Awards

Dianne Morrison-Beedy, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN received the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) Researcher Recognition Award in Tampa, Florida, during November. The award recognizes an outstanding current ANAC member who has made a significant contribution through research to advancing nursing science as it relates to the health and well-being of individuals living with or affected by HIV.

Maggie L. Holland, PhD, MPH, post doctoral fellow in the School of Nursing, also in the Division of Health Policy and Outcomes Program within the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine, was among the national honorees for outstanding research and service at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in November.

Madeline Schmitt, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNAP, Professor Emerita served as distinguished Visiting Professor and interprofessional education expert for the Arizona Telemedicine Program at the Dedication Day events for the new T-Health Institute on the new Phoenix campus of the University of Arizona School of Medicine on October 23. She also serves as Liaison from the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative to the local planning committee of the Arizona Telemedicine Program, who will host Collaborating Across Borders III [Canadian-American interprofessional education conference] in Phoenix in Fall, 2011.

Irena Pesis-Katz, PhD was named to the newly created research network that is part of New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s nationwide reform of the consumer reimbursement system for out-of-network health care charges.

Cathy Peters, RN, MS, APRN-BC received the New York State Nurses Association Media Award on October 10, 2009 at the NYSNA Convention 2009 in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Madeline Schmitt, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNAP, Professor Emerita is a major contributor to a grant entitled “Using Research Findings to Improve Nurse Care Coordination Practice and Policy”   funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for one year. Gerri Lamb, PhD, RN, FAAN is the PI.

Nancy M. Watson, RN, PhD, FGSA has been appointed to the National Advisory Board for the  Study of Disparities in Incontinence and Perineal Skin Damage in Nursing Home Elders. University of Minnesota.

Amanda Young was selected to receive the Sigma Theta Tau Undergraduate Scholarship Award for 2009-2010. The award was presented at the University of Rochester School of Nursing Alumni Luncheon on October 9.

Honors and Awards 

Sheldon D. Fields, Ph.D., R.N., F.N.P.-B.C., A.A.C.R.N., D.P.N.A.P., F.A.A.N.P., associate professor, has been named a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Health Policy Fellow for 2009-2010. The fellowship, which began September 1, enables Dr. Fields to spend one year in Washington, D.C. studying the health policy process.

Awards were presented to the following individuals at the University of Rochester School of Nursing Convocation on September 1, 2009:
Amanda Young received the Clare Dennison Prize.
Krista Scorsone and Yena Kim each received the Eleanor Hall Award.
Sonja Kreckel received the Loretta C. Ford Fellowship.
Susan Lowey received the Jill Thayer Award.
Ellen Volpe received the Katharine Donohoe Scholarly Practitioner Award. 
 

Susan W. Blaakman, MS, RN, NPP-BC has been notified that she is the recipient of a 2009 Presidential Scholar American Nurses’ Foundation grant award.

Sheldon D. Fields PhD, RN, FNP-BC, AACRN, DPNAP, FAANP has been elected to serve as Chair of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) Black Caucus. He will be working with the HPTN network to assure the inclusion of ethic minorities in their trials. He has also been elected Special Projects Chair of the Black Gay Research Group (BGRG), an interdisciplinary group of Black Gay scholars dedicated to advancing an agenda for research, policy and service in the interest of Black Gay men.

Shannon Gianotti, a 2009 graduate of the University of Rochester School of Nursing’s FNP Program and an APNN Program graduate, has been selected by the Awards Committee of The Nurse Practitioner Association NYS (NPA) as recipient of the Sandra F. Shaw Outstanding NP Student of the Year Award. She has also been selected for the Greater Rochester chapter of the NPA Student Award. 

Gail L. Ingersoll, EdD, RN, FAAN, FNAP has been named chair of Board 1 of the Medical Center’s Research Subjects Review Board. 

The University of Rochester School of Nursing has been awarded $130,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) Scholarship Program (Kathy Rideout, EdD, PNP-BC, FNAP, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Nursing,Project Director). Thirteen nursing students will receive $10,000 in support as they enter into accelerated programs during the 2009-2010 academic year. This is the second year in a row the School of Nursing has received funding from this program.

Honors and Awards

Carole Farley-Toombs, MS, RN, NEA, BC has been voted as President-Elect of the 2009 American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.

Susan W. Blaakman, MS, RN, NPP-BC was selected as an American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Janssen Student Scholar from a national pool of applicants. The award will be given at the annual conference in Charleston, SC in October 2009.

James McMahon, PhD received a notice of award from the National Institutes of Health –National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for his R01 entitled “HIV Risk Behavior of Adult Minority Heterosexual Men in New York City.” The project will focus onbasic epidemiological and behavioral research on risk factors associated with secondary transmission of HIV among seropositive adult African American and Latino self-identified heterosexual men in New York City. 

Dianne Morrison-Beedy, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN has been notified that she will receive the 2009 Researcher Recognition Award from the Association of Nurses inAIDS Care in Jacksonville, FL on November 1. This award recognizes an outstanding ANAC scientist who has made a significant contribution through research to advancing nursing science as it relates to the health and well-being of individuals living with or affected by HIV.

Tobie H. Olsan, PhD, MPA, RN, CNL, NEA, BC received a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Notice of Grant Award for her project entitled Comprehensive Geriatric Education Program.  

Maggie Kearney, PhD Programs Director, was notified that the School of Nursing’s GAANN Nursing Scholars program was funded for a second 3-year period after a competitive renewal application process. The GAANN program provides cost of living stipends and helps defraytuition costs for financially needy nurses who are seeking a PhD to become nursing faculty.The 3-year grant award to the SON is approximately $525,000 and will start in August, 2009.

Dianne Morrison-Beedy, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FANP, FAAN, Professor and Assistant Dean for Research at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, was named a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in June. Dr. Morrison-Beedy is co-director of the Clinical Core at the University of Rochester’s Developmental Center for AIDS Research.

Jill Quinn, PhD, RN, CS-ANP, FAHA, FNAP was featured at a Celebration on March 26, 2009 for local AHA funded researchers and was presented a plaque from the American Heart Association in honor of her life-saving work in the field of cardiovascular research and dedication to helping the AHA.

Sally A. Norton, PhD, RN, FNAP was inducted as a Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing, Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association in March, 2009. This is the inaugural class of 16 fellows across the USA and Canada.

Carla Jungquist, NP received notification of an Abstract Excellence Award from the Sleep Research Society for her dissertation abstract entitled The Relationship Among Chronic Pain, Sleep and Opioids. She will receive the award at the annual conference in June, 2009 in Seattle, WA.
